The Story behind the story - Ice Hunter's Prey

The Making of Ice Hunter’s Prey –

Ice Hunter’s Prey was my first stab at writing erotica and writing a time travel. Sounds like a lot to shove into a short story.

It was.

First and foremost in my mind was the fact I was not going to take literary license with a time period as so many authors have. It had to be on the mark historically.

Second, I had to complete the task of having the sex make sense. There is no gratuitous sex in Ice Hunter’s Prey. Albeit, there is a lot of sex in it.

Third, I had to complete the plot of Man vs. Nature as it related to the time period. Yes, I am a fully plotted writer. Whenever I sit to write a story - and understandably my plot is rarely a romance since I come from sci-fi and fantasy - I am more focused on the basic plot then I am anything else.

I got a fantastic boost to this story right from the start. The research intrigued me. Using several sites on the net plus the gem of a book, Little Ice Age, Big Chill - I found myself developing a story that literally mirrored the global warming issues we face today.

As a microcosm, a Viking colony in Greenland fit what I was after.

Ever wonder why most time travels take place in the not too distant past - the language barrier is a notorious hitch here. I faced that problem by using my vehicle, The Veil, to my advantage. A prior traveler bridges the communication disconnect.

The Veil is based upon my Irish roots. In my heritage there are scores of tales regarding this filmy portal between this reality and the next. I took that age old concept and created a predator. Time as a predator had a great number of possibilities.

After all that, with the ground work done and my plan in mind, Ice Hunter’s Prey flowed from my fingers with ease. It’s a story I have enjoyed writing and one I hope you will enjoy reading.

Until next time, thanks for tuning in –

All Amber Mentor wants is a clean house. She never suspects her idea to teach her sloppy cousin a lesson will lead her to a different time - literally.

Soren Elrickson is on the hunt for food, real food. The delectable treat he finds tangled in a bramble bush won’t satisfy his hunger, but she will serve another purpose. His lust ignites in the same instant he understands his colony can’t support another mouth to feed. He knows how his helpless find will pay her way - on the flat of her back.

Amber and Soren can’t resist each other, but passion doesn’t put food on the table in the unforgiving land of fourteenth-century Greenland. Soren will have to make a decision, one that may not only compromise her heart, but her life.

“Um...” Amber’s brain faltered. Her attention diverted to a movement down the slope from where they stood, and she watched a big, shaggy horse move toward them. Scrubbing her hands up and down her arms, she took the last few paces separating her from the big barbarian. Noting how he untied his horse’s reins from the oddly shaped saddle and how he soothed the animal, a spurt of jealousy flew through her system.

She could use a little soothing right about now. A cup of coffee and a big piece of cake would be stellar, too. “Hey,” she squawked when he picked her up and set her on the saddle. Reflexively, she grabbed his fur-covered shoulders somewhere between leaving the ground and sitting astride the monstrous horse. The tingle shooting through her palms straight up her arms to careen down her spine increased her unease. “Could you warn me before you get all macho again?” she snapped, her mind on a new, different, worrisome concern.

“I will do as I wish,” he said, gaining the saddle in a single fluid move. He arranged his cloak around her, shifted her so she sat closer to his body, then gathered the reins. He prodded his mount into a walk.

“That feels wonderful,” Amber commented lazily. Inside the heavy furs, it was warm and toasty. The feel of his body heat eased the tension from her shoulders. “Thank you...” Realizing she hadn’t bothered to ask him his name, she peeked up at the scruffy beard obscuring her view of his him. She wished she could see his eyes having always considered them the mirror to a man’s soul. “I’m sorry, I don’t know your name. I’m Amber.” Forcing the smile to her lips, she waited to see if he’d acknowledge her at all.

She tipped her face up to stare at his scraggly beard. “Who are you?”

“I am Soren Elrickson. You will call me Master.”

He lay there, trying his best to ignore the pain. It seemed inconsequential to worry about mere physical pain. He had suffered the vampire’s kiss. Any minute now his body would change and he would become that which he hunted. How ignominious to fail on his first mission.

Being one of the undead wouldn’t be so bad. He rarely left his father’s basement during the day, anyway. If he could stomach sushi, blood should be no problem. It would be like salty ketchup. Now that he thought about it, there were a number of people he wouldn’t mind putting the bite on--that smelly Mr. Callabash, for one. Breathred had never forgiven him for an erroneous graded D-minus in the fifth grade. Smelly old fart always had it in for him. Yes, this could work out for the best, he thought with a devilish grin.

A weight fell on his chest, which could only be the vampire’s hand. This was it, the coup de grace. Breathred squinched his eyes tight, not wanting to see his final moments at the vampire’s hands, or fangs—whatever the case may be.

The undead beast’s tongue flicked over the flesh of his neck. It felt like raw, wet sandpaper against his skin. Breathred felt the soft purr of its breath tickling his nose hairs. A river of sweat swam over his forehead in expectation of his immediate demise.

Breathred silently clicked off the seconds until his life ended. He was hesitant to state the obvious, his life was meaningless, but it was close to being so. He had never amounted to anything. There was so much more he could have done with the life he’d been dealt. Heck, he never even left his father’s house, unless moving into the basement counted, which he was sure didn’t. If this was to be his end, then he would face it like a man, or like a mewling coward who was able to at least open his eyes to witness it. It was the least he could do, considering how badly he had screwed everything else up.

On the count of three his eyes flew open. A pair of slotted eyes greeted him. They were framed by a face of gray fur. He noticed none of those details. The one thing he did take note of was the fact the vampire’s long white whiskers tickled his cheek.

Realization hit him like a soon-to-be-ex-wife with a summons in one hand and a ball peen hammer in the other. The vampire was a cat. Incredulous to be sure. Vampire cats simply were unheard of. Could this be a new breed sent by the undead hierarchy to ensnare People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for its own foul devises? It was too dastardly to consider.

To his ultimate horror the ca-mpire, as Breathred decided to call it, licked him and proceeded to situate itself on his face. Breathred was content to let his captor do as he pleased, as long as it continued his existence. It was when the ca-mpire lifted his leg and started licking regions best left unnamed when Breathred had finally had enough. He could take being transformed into one of the walking dead, but being the receptacle for said feline’s nether juices was where he drew the proverbial line.

Publisher behaving very, Very, VERY badly

Publisher behaving very, Very, VERY badly.

I don’t normally do this, but this issue has taken on a life of its own - garish, awakened from deepest, dankest swamp, life of its own.

Samantha Storm, a writer I deeply respect and appreciate for her talent, has been put through the veritable ringer by the management of New Concepts Publishing. As you all know, I forewarn you not to buy specifically Northern Skye, or Night Beauty, both my stories under contract with NCP due to lack of editing. Samantha did not have the same issue that I did. She merely asked a question and voiced her opinion which got her removed from both NCP’s author loop and reader’s loop.

Now that this is an issue across the spectrum and readers are openly complaining about poor customer service, I think it needs to be brought to light.

If you’d like to leave me a comment here - great, but please stop by Samantha’s blog http://www.romancejunkies.com/rjblog/?p=235 and give her your insight.

Her letter to the president of NCP, Madris DePasteur.

A lot of you know that before I started Romance Junkies I was an aspiring author. And a few years into running Romance Junkies I sold some stories to New Concepts Publishing.
Now I find myself in the middle of an Author vs. Publisher drama. And I figured I might as well view this as an opportunity to find out– what would you do if you were in my shoes?
So here is the spiel, I am going to post the letter I posted to the NCP Readers loop. The letter that got me booted from the loop (did I mention I was also booted from the NCP Author’s loop). Nothing like being booted from all of your publishing house groups to make a chick feel all warm and fuzzy.

Read the letter and tell me what would you do if you suddenly found yourself in this situation.
From the comments posted by authors and readers I will pick randomly on June 20th some winners.

What can you win?
1 person will win a $100.00 gift certificate to Amazon.
2 people will win a box of Chinese fortune cookies (300 cookies in the box). If you live out of country I have to substitute the cookies for a $25.00 gift certificate to Amazon.

Look, more ways to win: If you tell a friend about the blog and send them over to comment — make sure your friend mentions you sent them over– you could both win…. What you ask? Well, you are eligible for the prizes listed above, but after I pick those winners I will also pick ten people and their ten friends and you will all get some kona coffee. You aren’t a coffee drinker? Then no worries for those of you who don’t like coffee, I will substitute my favorite chai tea.
So sit back and check out my letter to the New Concepts Publishing Readers. Then tell me what you would do if you found yourself in my shoes

Here’s my letter:

A few months ago I saw a post from an unhappy NCP reader. The reader
had problems getting the book she purchased and her pleas to customer
service were going unanswered. She wasn’t sure what was going on with
the company and she voiced, at the time, a simple statement – I hope
the authors at NCP are getting better treatment.

There are a lot of unhappy authors at New Concepts Publishing.
Everyone tells me that readers are not concerned with the internal
politics within a publishing house. And honestly I don’t blame you.
I’ve enough turmoil in my daily life I don’t need or want more drama.

Here’s the problem, when it comes to what’s happening behind the
scenes at NCP, we the authors don’t seem to have any power to change
things. But you the readers do.

Over the last year many of the authors at NCP have found themselves in
the same situation that you, the reader, face when you’ve a problem
downloading a book. Your pleas for help go unanswered. Communication
from the house is nonexistent. But eventually, in time, and after a
lot of frustration, you do get an answer. I can tell you that over the
last year, for myself, and many others at the house, emails we’ve sent
never got answered. Questions we’ve asked were simply ignored. And
when frustrated authors try to bring questions into the Author’s loop
they are met with hostility and often bullying.

Some of the unhappy authors brave enough to voice their concerns find
themselves suddenly in a situation where their work is taken down from
the site.

Can you imagine a more horrible situation for an author? You, the
reader, can’t buy their books and the author can’t sell their stories
to another house. The author must sit behind the NCP scenes waiting,
in some instances, years until their contracts run out.

I now find myself banned from the NCP Author’s loop. I was foolish
enough to question what was going on and voice my opinions. And noweven though NCP is in breach of contract with me and should take down
my stories, management says that my titles will remain on the site
until my contracts expires. What does that mean for me? More drama –
hire a lawyer, spend tons of money trying to get the company to take
down my stories. Or worse sit back and do nothing. And feel so
disheartened, some days I worry I`ll forever lose the joy I have for
writing.

Are all the authors at NCP unhappy? No, there are some authors who’ve
been treated really well by the company. And because of it, no matter
what they’re told, they refuse to believe things are so very bad for
the rest of us.

I’m sure after I post this I’ll be banned from the NCP Readers Group.
My voice will be silenced. Again. This post will suddenly be buried in
a zillion posts about nothing by the authors whose emails and
questions always get answered. The few happy NCP authors who never
seem to be on the receiving end of hostility and unprofessional
behavior from management.

And the unhappy NCP authors? We’ll still be here, sitting behind the
scenes getting the raw end of the deal.

Much of the situation at NCP has come out and has been documented on
the blogs:

http://dearauthor.com/wordpress/2008/03/12/new-concepts-publishing-under-heat-by\-authors/
http://karenknowsbest.com/?p=1018

So there you have it. No one wants you to know what’s going on at NCP.
But even worse, management thinks that even if you find out, you won’t
care.
